Gallbladder Treatment | Can Your Body Pass A Gallstone?
There are non-surgical gallbladder treatments available which can effectively dissolve and help your body to eliminate gallstones.
The gallbladder plays an important role in our digestive process. It stores and concentrates the greenish, brown bile which our liver manufactures, then releases it in precise amounts to break down the fats in our food. When bile components such as cholesterol, bilirubin and salts are imbalanced, hardened stones may form inside the gallbladder. These can be composed primarily of cholesterol, or of bilirubin and will be either greenish in colour or dark brown. These hardened deposits can range in size from tiny particles to a couple of inches across and though they aren’t noticeable much of the time, when they move into a duct and block it they cause extreme pain. Gallstones and gallbladder inflammation disrupt the digestive process. If you have gallstones or cholecystitis, ( gallbladder inflammation) you may note gas and bloating after meals, nausea, vomiting and pain in the upper right abdomen. Pain often radiates to the shoulder or back. When a stone becomes lodged in a bile duct, the resultant gallbladder “attack” may cause misery anywhere from 15 minutes to many hours.
Diagnosis
Doctors diagnose gallstones most commonly with ultrasound imaging and will also commonly recommend a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, (gallbladder removal surgery) however it is important to consider and explore non-surgical solutions which may allow you to keep your gallbladder and restore its healthy function.
Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy
Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy is a procedure, which utilizes uses ultrasound shock waves to break apart stones into small pieces which can be passed through the bile ducts and into the intestines.
Ursodiol
Directly injection therapy with chemicals such as ursodiol or chenodiol may be applied directly into the gallbladder to dissolve Gallstones. More commonly, oral litholysis taken in the form of bile acid pills, remains the principal non-invasive medical treatment for cholesterol gallstones. Roughly 80% of gallstones are made up of cholesterol deposits and these are the easiest to break down by thinning the bile. These treatments tend to be most effective for small stones. Ursodiol is a naturally occurring bile acid which is only a minor component of bile acid in humans, but a major fraction of it in bears and other hibernating animals. It is water soluble and less toxic to human cells than other bile acid medications.
